Becharof Lake

Lake Becharof, nestled in the Lake and Peninsula Borough of Alaska, is a remarkable natural feature of the Aleutian Range. Stretching over 37 miles (60 km) in length and situated 23 miles (37 km) southeast of Egegik, this lake is not only the second largest in Alaska, after Iliamna Lake, but also holds prestigious rankings nationwide. It is eighth in the United States by volume and fourteenth by area.

Under the orders of Alexander Andreyevich Baranov of the Shelikhov-Golikov Company, Bocharov’s expedition aimed to find a portage near Kodiak. He navigated the lake, initially referred to as “Oz(ero) Ugashek” on Russian charts, and eventually led his crew from the lake’s easternmost point to the North Pacific Ocean, detailing his discoveries upon his return.

After the Alaska Purchase in 1867, the lake was officially named Becharof, an Americanized version of Bocharov’s name, by naturalist William Healey Dall of the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Coast Survey.
